The Charlotte Business Journal reports that Harris Teeter Inc. has hired a professional chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and is developing a new fresh foods program “n an effort to capture more of the growing eat-at-home market.”

According to the paper, “the fresh-foods program calls for increased variety and ethnic additions, cooking demonstrations, explanations of how to put together a full meal from the fresh-foods case and even how to choose a ripe melon.”

It is all about creating and focusing on differential advantages, which is what Harris Teeter appears to be doing.

For many shoppers, cooking remains uncharted territory, and it is important for retailers to break down the barriers and de-mystify the section by explaining, demonstrating and educating.

Just throwing product out there isn’t enough.
