Family Dollar Stores, which operates more than 4,600 stores in 41 states, announced that it opened 22 new units last month -- five in Texas; four each in Illinois and Michigan; two in Wisconsin; and one each in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio and Utah.

- Not a hugely significant announcement in and of itself, but worth noting because so-called “dollar stores” seem to be the flavor of the month in retailing circles. Many of the companies in the dollar store business seem to be doing better in tough economic times than other retailing entities, and Wal-Mart is reportedly experimenting with its own “dollar sections” in a number of its units.
