business news in context, analysis with attitude

Irish supermarket retailer Superquinn won the Unilever Award at the IGD Food Industry Awards last night in London, lauded for its development of an environmentally friendly reusable shopping bag (reported on by MNB earlier this month).

The new bag was launched about a year ago, and according to Superquinn has reduced time spent at checkouts by 10 percent and reduced plastic bag usage by 97 percent. Superquinn has sold more than 1.2 million bags to date.
KC's View:
Of course, Superquinn is aided by the fact that plastic bags cost consumers money in Ireland…but we think retailers can learn from the Superquinn experience. There will be plenty more countries where, eventually, plastic bags will cost consumers money as governments look for ways to cut down on garbage.
