As of this posting, Safeway had not announced the closing or sale of its Dominick’s division in Chicago.
While a strike has been authorized by the company’s unionized workers, none has yet been called, even though the labor contract between the two sides ended last Saturday.
Negotiations apparently are continuing, though the two sides have different perspectives. Safeway says that its most recent offer is its final offer while the union keeps saying that it hopes “good faith” negotiations will yield some sort of agreement.
"We'll talk but we've put on the table our last, best and final offer," Brian Dowling, a Safeway spokesman, told the Chicago Tribune. "The offer won't get any better. We've had eight strikes in the last eight years, and the offer has never improved after the strike. Safeway has stretched our offer to the limit and can't offer more without causing the business to fail.”
