  • BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. posted a quarterly net profit, reversing a year-ago loss, but offered a cautious projection for next year. The retailer posted net income of $23.4 million in the third quarter ended Nov. 2, compared with a loss of $33.5 million in the same period last year. Net sales rose 11 percent to $1.4 billion for the quarter, but same-store sales were down 0.1 percent.


  • Sainsbury announced a 10.7 percent increase in pre-tax profits, to the equivalent of $544 million (US) for the first half pf the fiscal year, with first half sales up 2.8 percent.


  • Starbucks Coffee Japan experienced a 55 percent decline in first half net. While sales were up for the period, it seemed that all the growth was due to new stores, with same-store sales in decline amid concerns that the Japanese interest in expensive gourmet coffee is waning.
