business news in context, analysis with attitude

The New York Times reports that Amazon.com will now operate CDNow's website, meaning that the company now sells CDs from its own site, CDNow, Borders.com, and VirginMega.com.

Bertelsmann, which bought CDNow for $117 million in July 2000, will close its CDNow offices and layoff personnel as it cedes control f the site to Amazon.

In other deals, Amazon pays the owning company a percentage of each sale, though the CDNow deal detailers were not made public.

Ironically, CDNow was the leader in the music field from the time it was started in 1994 until another online store started selling CDs -- Amazon.com.
