business news in context, analysis with attitude

Bankrupt Kmart Corp. has forged a deal with Mexican pop singer/actress Thalia to develop a line of clothing from shoes to lingerie, plus accessories, that it hopes will appeal to Hispanic consumers.

The lines should start appearing on Kmart shelves next summer.
KC's View:
Of course, we’re not exactly sure how many shelves Kmart actually will have by next summer…but la esperanza salta eterno.

Of course, until we saw this story, we didn’t even know there was a pop star named Thalia…so much for our cultural expertise…

This is hardly an isolated step for Kmart. Already this year, since going into bankruptcy protection, Kmart has launched a magazine for Hispanic customers, and has started using Spanish language advertising in print, radio and TV.

The big question is whether it is también poco también tarde.
