business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Los Angeles Times reports that more than 25 percent of kids on California are overweight, and almost 40 percent are not physically fit.

Public health experts say overweight and unfit children are far more likely to develop health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and cancer. They pronounced themselves “shocked” and “appalled” by the statistics.

A number of studies have shown that the concentration of overweight children is much higher among African-American and Hispanic children, as compared to whites and Asians.

There also is a belief that the availability of junk food increases the likelihood of children becoming overweight and out of shape.
KC's View:
Remarkable. Californians have all that sunshine and warm weather, and they’re getting fat just like the rest of the country.

These kinds of statistics are the reason that obesity lawsuits are not going to go away…and why anyone in the food business needs to take the obesity issue very seriously.
