The Los Angeles Times reports that California officials have ordered more than 1 million egg-producing hens to be destroyed because of a fast-expanding and deadly virus that threatens the state’s $3 billion poultry industry. More than 100,000 commercial chickens already have been destroyed by agriculture officials.
In addition, officials ordered that a poultry quarantine in the state be expanded to San Diego and Orange counties.
While egg producers in Southern California can still sell their products because there is no threat to human beings, poultry farmers cannot.
Similar steps reportedly are being taken in Hong Kong because of an outbreak of the virus there.
