USAToday reports this morning that the death knell has been sounded for the VHS tape, as studios phase out their VHS releases in favor of the burgeoning DVD format. Some retailers also are cutting back or eliminating VHS tapes from their inventories.
The biggest sign of the shift? Wal-Mart reportedly is relegating VHS tapes to “dump bins.”
The paper notes that the film industry and retailers want to avoid what happened to the eight-track tape, which vanished from use almost overnight, leaving many with bloated inventories that couldn’t be sold or even given away.
