The Associated Press reports that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has increased its testing for mad cow disease to make sure it does not become a problem in the US.
The USDA says that it tested 19,990 cattle last year for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or more than three times the number of cattle tested in 2001.
"Our surveillance level far exceeds international testing standards and is just one component of a multifaceted regulatory and compliance system that is keeping the United States free of BSE," Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman told the AP.
