E-Commerce Times reports that online sales in the US passed $45 billion last year, and that it makes up a growing segment of the overall retail economy -- 1.6 percent in the fourth quarter, as opposed to 1.3 percent in the third quarter. The fourth quarter featured $14.3 billion in sales, a 28 percent increase from the same period a year earlier, and the best quarter for e-commerce on record.

E-commerce made up 1.4 percent of total retail expenditures during 2002, not including online travel, ticket sales, and online brokerages.
