The US Environmental protection Agency (EPA) yesterday approved a kind of genetically modified corn developed by Monsanto to be resistant to corn rootworm.

The New York Times reports that corn rootworm is the pest that requires the single largest use of conventional pesticides in the United States. Stephen L. Johnson, the EPA's assistant administrator for prevention, pesticides and toxic substances, told the NYT that “from an environmental and human health perspective, this product replaces some very significant problematic, or potentially problematic, chemicals."
