- Safeway has been hit with a race discrimination suit filed by an African-American executive who says that despite his law degree, he was passed over for a promotion in favor of a white male with a high school education. The plaintiff, Calvin Stover, is seeking “$300,000 in compensatory damages, in excess of $1 million in punitive damages…the promotion of African Americans in the food service industry”…and “the removal of the involved Safeway managers from their current position in an effort to eliminate future discriminatory acts against African Americans by these individuals,” according to a press release issued yesterday by the plaintiff.
