The Los Angeles Times reports this morning that just days after Philip Morris USA, a division of Altria Group, said that it might not be able to make its next scheduled payment to 46 states after a $10.1-billion verdict March 21 in an Illinois class-action lawsuit, those states’ attorneys general are threatening new lawsuits.
“I'm confident that if they don't make the payment, 46 states will sue under the master settlement agreement, probably the next day,” Oklahoma Atty. Gen. Drew Edmondson told the LAT.
The states need the money in order to fill in their own budget gaps this year.
