business news in context, analysis with attitude

As we head into the weekend, a few recommendations from the Content Guy…

  • “Phone Booth,” is a terrific, edge-of-your-seat thriller that is edgy, well-acted and will keep you guessing. The plot -- about a sniper who targets a sleazy NY publicist -- sort of falls apart in the last five minutes when the filmmakers have to figure out a way to wrap it all up in a satisfying manner, but it almost doesn‘t matter -- because to that point, your stomach has been tied up in knots watching a star performance by Colin Farrell.

  • ”Anger Management,” starring Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler, on the other hand, is a real disappointment. It is funny in spots, but one of the unique things about Sandler is that in most of his movies he gets major talents (and they don’t get more major than Nicholson) to play down to his level. He may be a big star, but Sandler is a minor talent. As opposed, say, to someone like Albert Brooks, who may never be as big a box office draw but is an enormous talent. At least, in our opinion…

  • We’ve enjoyed four terrific wines over the past few weeks that we want to share with you…

    • “Valley of the Moon” Syrah, from the Sonoma Valley, which is rich and elegant and oh so tasty.

    • Guernoc Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a full-bodied red that goes great with a nice, rich risotto.

    • Francis Coppola’s Diamond Series Pinot Noir, which is a little richer than many California Pinots, so we’re told.

    • And St. Clement Chardonnay, which is a great white wine for people who prefer red. (Don't know how else to describe it…we’re working on our wine-related adjectives…)

That’s it for this week. Have a good weekend, and we’ll see you Monday morning…
