- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported that April same-store sales at stores open at least a year were coming in at the low end of its expected five-to-seven percent projections for monthly growth. Easter sales were said to be fine, but continued lousy weather has been inhibiting sales of warm weather merchandise.
- Target Corp. reported that same-store sales at its discount and department stores were above its expectations for Easter week, and in line with projections of April sales increases of four-to-six percent.
- Seiyu Ltd, a Japanese retailer 37.7 percent owned by Wal-Mart, posted a net loss for 2002 the equivalent of $754 million (US); while sales were up 2.8 percent, the increase was below what had been expected by the retailer.
