  • The Commonwealth of Massachusetts reportedly is being sued by Shaw’s Supermarkets, Hannaford Bros., and By Y Foods, in addition to CVS and Brooks Pharmacy, over a controversial $1.30 prescription tax levied by the state. The tax had been designed to close a budget shortfall; a number of pharmacies have stopped passing the tax on to consumers.

  • The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) completed the previously-announced sale of four stores in northern New England to The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

In other A&P news, reports persist that it is close to selling off its New Orleans division.
