business news in context, analysis with attitude

The New York Times reports that even as Sysco Corp. often is thought of as “the Wal-Mart of the foodservice distribution business,” there exists the possibility that especially because Ahold’s US Foodservice division is embroiled in an accounting scandal, Wal-Mart could decide to get into competition with both of them via its McLane Foodservice unit.

Making this scenario even more possible is the fact that a number of Sysco’s customers accuse it of doing business with a heavy hand and being arrogant in its dealings with them.
KC's View:
There are two possibilities here.

One is that because of Wal-Mart’s size, ubiquity, and need to satisfy Wall Street through continued growth, everybody assumes that Wal-Mart wants to get into their business. Which Wal-Mart doesn’t.

The other is that because of Wal-Mart’s size, ubiquity, and need to satisfy Wall Street through continued growth, Wal-Mart does actually want to get into any business that seems to offer it an opportunity.

The foodservice rumor seems to dovetail nicely with the rumor that Wal-Mart will get into the wholesaling business with a major push.

They may just be rumors. But they are rumors that should focus the mind…
