business news in context, analysis with attitude

Published reports say that the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P) may be looking to make some acquisitions…which would be a marked change from its recent history, when it was selling or closing stores in order to stay afloat.

CEO Christian Haub told analysts this week that the company is looking at “strategic opportunities that are emerging in our industry.”
KC's View:
What seems to be emboldening A&P is the fact that it recently reported a pretty decent quarter. But we have to question the rationale; after all, best we could tell, the numbers looked good because it had a lot of revenue from its sale of its Canadian operations.

Even Haub said that "results from the ongoing business were unsatisfactory.” Making an ongoing unsatisfactory business bigger doesn’t sound like such a great idea to us.
