The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union has called for its members who work for Stop & Shop and Pathmark stores on long Island and in New York City, Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties to begin mobilizing for a strike. The unionized employees have authorized the union to call for a strike; their contracts with the retailers end on Saturday night at 11:59 pm.
Organized employees who work for Long Island-based King Kullen, who also authorized a strike and have a contract running out at the same time, have agreed to negotiate separately with that company. King Kullen previously had been negotiating collectively with the other two chains.
At issue are wage and benefits proposals that the union feels put experienced workers at a disadvantage.
